Architecture may be the most tangible form of history, but stories, culture, and people are the most enduring. The Sankofa, a symbol of the Akan people of Ghana, depicts a bird retrieving an egg from its back, representing the use of knowledge of the past to inform a better future. Another version of the Sankofa is a swirling heart commonly used as a motif in the ironwork created by enslaved blacksmiths. These symbols of hope were embedded in the past and are still enjoyed today.
This logo design, reminiscent of the swirling Sankofa heart and a labyrinth etched in the ground, encapsulates the past and present in a monogram with Southern sensibility. It is a beautiful reminder to reflect on the past and walk with it into the present.
